Abstract

The ‘Afterword’ revisits Janaki Nair’s seminal study of K. Venkatappa and evaluates him as a figure that could enable an entry point into the imagination of a Karnataka modern. The first section uses the 2016 protests against the privatisation of Venkatappa Art Gallery as a mode of reading Karnataka today, showing the mismatch between Venkatappa’s desire for a site where a viewing public could be educated into the visual arts and new demands made in the context of contemporary Karnataka. The second section examines the public gallery in the context of both the nation and the region after 2020 and makes a case for urgently and strenuously rethinking art viewing, readership, and practice in contemporary India.
