Abstract

Citizenship is an imperative of basic human rights. It entails security. It provides a sense of identity and belongingness. It is empowering and enables development. In the last few decades, however, the global burden of conflicts within the national boundaries has become the dominant reality that nations and humanitarian agencies are confronted with. This rising phenomenon has led to the rapid growth of statelessness and refugee population movement, resulting in wanton violation of human rights of individuals and communities. In most cases such conflicts involved protracted state-induced violence along ethnic–religious lines. One such example is the ethnic Rohingyas, a minority Muslim community from Myanmar (Burma) which has been discriminated against and persecuted for decades.
